France fires a warning. In their final friendly Sunday night, France beat Northern Ireland 3–1 — Michael Olise scored all three. That's 57 goal contributions in a single club season (OptaJoe: 26 assists, most in Europe's big-5 leagues). France go to New Jersey on June 13 knowing Olise has the form of his life.

The referee controversy nobody saw coming. Somali referee Omar Abdulkadir Artan — CAF's 2025 Men's Referee of the Year and one of FIFA's 52 selected officials — was denied entry to the United States at Miami International Airport on June 8. US Customs cited "vetting concerns." FIFA confirmed the ban but said host governments control visa decisions. Artan would have been the first Somali official to referee at a World Cup finals.

Azteca makes history a third time. Mexico vs South Africa on June 11 makes the Estadio Azteca the only venue to host three different World Cup openers: 1970 (Mexico vs USSR), 1986 (Bulgaria vs Italy), and now 2026. No other stadium has come close.
Last-chance saloons. Messi (37) — 26 World Cup appearances, the most ever — confirmed for Argentina's opener. Son Heung-min in Guadalajara. Luka Modrić. These men will not do this again.
